John F. Kennedy Profile fo Courage Essay Contest

Essay Topic:
Write an original and creative essay of less than 1,000 words that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by JFK in Profiles of Courage. Use at least five varied sources such as newspaper, articles, books, and/or personal interviews to:
  • Describe& analyze the decisions, actions, and risks of an elected public official in the US since 1956 who has couragesly addressed a political issue at the local, state, national, or international level.

Guidelines:


  • Subject must be an elected official in the US since 1956. Students are encourage to choose an original subject and tell a story that has not yet been told.
  • Essays must demonstrate an understanding of President Kennedy's definition of political courage. See website.
  • Essays must include a bibliography of at least five varied, reliable resources, including a non-internet source.
  • John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Edward M. Kennedy and past Profile in Courage Award reciepents are not eligible topics for essays.

Awards:

  • First-place winner is awarded $5,000. 2nd place recieves $1,000 & up to five finalists recieve $500.
  • The nomination teacher of the 1st place winner will recieve the JFK Public Service grant for $500 to encourage student leadership & civic engagement.

Eligiblity:

  • US high school students in grade 9-12 attending public, parochial, or home schools
  • Past winners & finialists are not eligible
  • Employees of Fidelitey Investments & members of their families are not eligible.

Contest Registration & Submission:

All students must register online. Essays can be submitted online (perferred) or via regular mail by the postmark date of January 9, 2010.
