Walter "Sweetness" Payton Memorial Scholarship

THEWALTER ‘SWEETNESS’ PAYTONMEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP


Applications are now being accepted for the Walter “Sweetness” Payton Memorial Scholarship .The scholarship amount is $6,500.00. This scholarship will be awarded to a Mississippi graduate attending any college or university in the United States. The Scholarship is renewable yearly as long as the student maintains a 3.0 GPA.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
*Must be accepted to a 4-year college or university in the United States (acceptance letter submitted with application required);
*Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and above;
*Submit the Walter “SWEETNESS” Payton Memorial Scholarship application;
*Written essay based on FINANCIAL need;
*Leadership Qualities (Exemplified by participation in professional organizations, extracurricular activities and community involvement.);

Community Friends of ICS Scholarship

The Community Friends of ICS announces the sponsorship of 26 educational scholarships in the amount of $750 to be given to two seniors in each of the thirteen counties served by ICS. The scholarship is for the first year of college or vocational training and will be awarded in two allotments of $375.

Any high school senior, who is a former Head Start student or has a sister or brother currently enrolled in Head Start, may apply. Applicants may complete an application form which requires a typed composition on, “How This Scholarship will Benefit Me.” Applicants must also obtain a written recommendation from their principal, counselor, or teacher. Applicants must be eligible to enroll in an academic, vocational or technical institution, and submit proof of enrollment before receiving the award.

Applications forms may be obtained from the high school or local Head Start center and may be returned to the Community Friends of ICS at PO Box 5711, Holly Springs, MS 38634 no later than March 12, 2010. Those chosen will be notified by mail.

Vaughan Memorial Scholarship

DAVID GLENN VAUGHAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The David Glenn Vaughan Memorial Scholarship is a one time, $500.00 scholarship, offered to a graduating New Hope High School Senior who has chosen a career in the field of business or education. The student must participate in athletics.
The student must have maintained a 3.0 (B) or better average through high school and plan to enroll in an accredited institution for higher learning.
Student must have attended New Hope High School for both Junior & Senior years. The student should have a clear disciplinary record, including no suspensions, and should possess high moral and personal characteristics. The student should exhibit those qualities of leadership respected by both students and teachers.
The application should be completed and returned to Holli McBrayer by March 1, 2010
Scholarship money will be paid directly to the institution in the recipient’s name.
Please include the following with your completed application:
· Section I, II & III
· Copy of official transcript
· One letter of reference

Junior Auxiliary Scholarship

I have Junior Auxiliary Scholarships in my office.
Qualifications:
· Be a graduating senior
· Have maintained a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 system through all school work

We will consider the scholastic excellence, participation in school and community activities but will look strongly at the financial need for assistance.

This will be a 4-year scholarship for $500.00 a semester.

SABR – Negro Leagues Committee Scholarship Application, 2009-10

The NEGRO LEAGUES COMMITTEE (NLC) of the SOCIETY FOR AMERICAN BASEBALL RESEARCH (SABR) is pleased to announce their 2009-10 essay writing contest for high school seniors. SABR is a global team of nearly 7000 individuals and more than 25 research committees. Originating in 1971, the NLC is SABR’s only committee dedicated exclusively to the history of black baseball. Since 1998, the NLC has hosted a JERRY MALLOY NEGRO LEAGUE CONFERENCE.
Some of our initiatives include;
1)donation of books to local schools and/or libraries,
2) raising funds to purchase headstones for
unmarked graves of former players, and the
3) essay writing contest.
Below are instructions for the 2009-10 essay writing contest.
There will be two $2,500 scholarships awarded from SABR.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
1. Current high school senior.
2. Anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application.
3. Planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution.
4. Carrying a minimum 2.5 GPA at the end of their junior year of high school.
SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Application must be completed in full.
2. Your essay must be attached to your application.
3. Your submission must include a letter of recommendation from a high school
teacher, guidance counselor or a school administrator.

The Planning Committee of the JERRY MALLOY NEGRO LEAGUE COMMITTEE will review all applications and make two selections. Note, only one essay will be accepted per
applicant. The scholarship winners will be notified by Jackie Robinson’s Debut Day,
April 15, 2010.
