USM - Luckyday Scholars

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Luckyday Foundation Citizenship Scholars Program is not accepting applications for 2009. The program looks for exemplary student candidates who demonstrate self-motivation, high school involvement, servant leadership, commitment to community service, and need financial assistance for college.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Luckyday Foundation Citizenship Scholars Program will be providing, $15,500 over a four year period. Additionally, a one-time $4,000 study abroad scholarship offered at least 20 students each year provides a life changing opportunity to experience cultures different from their own.

The Luckyday program requires scholars to enroll in a Luckyday Citizenship Seminar and University 101 course during the fall semester of their freshman year. This introduces the students to university services and familiarizes them with the Southern Miss campus. The Luckyday Citizenship Program also requires scholars to perform service learning activities, become campus leaders & benefit the Southern Miss community. The Luckyday Citizenship Program strives to help students develop into serving citizens & Southern Miss graduates.

Toyota Community Scholars

Toyota Motor Sales is pleased to present the 12th annual Toyota Community Scholars program for high school seniors . The program will award 100 renewable scholarships, valuated at $10,000 or $20,000 payable over four years, to seniors who enroll at a 4 year college/university in the United States starting in the fall of 2009. The scholarship winners will be announced in April 2009.

Toyota believes helping people who improve the quality of life in their community is an essential component of corporate responsibility. The Toyota Community Scholars program recognizes academic excellence & rewards young people who actively participate in community service.

Alabama A & M High School Senior Day

Alabama A & M will host their annual High School Senior Day program on Saturday, November 8, 2008, beginning at 7:30 a.m., in conjunction with the National Aeronautics & Space Administration(NASA).

Activities for the day include visitation of our academic displays, academic breakout sessions, entertainment, tours of campus, and a NASA onsite display. Complimentary breakfast & lunch will be served. The University will host our guests at the football game between Alabama A & M and Prairie View A & M University at 1:00 p.m. at the Louis Crews Stadium on campus. The highly acclaimed Marching Maroon & White Band will perform at halftime.

NAACP Scholarship Essay

“What does it mean to me to see Senator Barack Obama become the first African-American President of the United States of America?”

Each year the NAACP give scholarship awards to some deserving students. The NAACP give Scholarship Awards each year. This year the awards will be presented at The 2008 Freedom Fund Banquet to be held at the Trotter Convention Center @ 7:00 p.m. on October 18, 2008. The deadline for submission is October 16, 2008.

This year the awards will be shared locally among the 4 high schools. Students interested must have a cumulative gpa 3.00 The Essay must be 250 words, typed.
Essay Title: “What does it mean to me to see Senator Barack Obama become the first African-American President of the United States of America?”

Heart to Heart Hospice Scholarship

Heart to Heart Hospice is offering two $500.00 scholarships to local graduating seniors. The guidelines for participation are as follows:
· Student must plan on attending a 2 or 4 year college following graduation
· Student must volunteer a minimum of 10 hours with our volunteer program
· Student must submit a reference check and complete a brief orientation program prior to volunteering
· Student will have no direct patient contact during the volunteer experience, if under the age of 18
· Student must submit a typed essay with no less than 300 words reflecting his/her experience while volunteering with Heart to Heart Hospice
· There are no GPA requirements for this scholarship

Applications are available in my office. All volunteer applications must be turned in no later than November 3, 2008 the deadline for completing volunteer time is Friday, April 17, 2009. The essay deadline is Friday, May 1, 2009.

Classical Singer's High School Vocal Competition '09

More than$2,000,000 in scholarships & university scholarships are available. In addition to the scholarships available there are $7,500 in cash prizes being awarded and students will automatically receive a free subscription to Classical Singer magazine.

Interested students need to register for the First Round of the ’09 Classical Singer High School Vocal Competition. The First round begins as early as November 8 and space is limited at each location.

At this unique Competition your students will sing for distinguished judges who will do something almost unheard of – give invaluable written feedback. And students get crucial live competition experience. Plus they will be the special recruiting guests of the host school as they meet faculty & see the facilities first-hand.

The regular registration fee is $75, but students can save $10 by using the discount code PCMTD1.

The First Round of the Competition runs from November 1 – March 15 at 35 universities throughout the country. Top three singers at each location, plus multiple general finalists, will advance to the Second Round, held during the Classical Singer Convention in Chicago on May 30-31 at the Westin O’Hare hotel. Champions for Children Scholarship

What is the Champions for Children Scholarship?
Champions for Children is the largest privately-funded scholarship program in Mississippi. The program offers mentors the opportunity to apply for scholarships as a reward for mentoring service. Scholarships are awarded to high school seniors across the State of Mississippi who have demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of young people through mentoring. A selection committee reviews all applications. The applicants with the highest overall scores are selected to receive scholarships. The award amounts are as follows:
· $5,000 scholarships
· $2,500 scholarships
· $2,000 scholarships
· $1,000 scholarships

What are the Criteria?
· Attend school & reside in Mississippi
· Be a High School Senior in the 2008-2009 school year
· Certify 100 hours or more of mentoring, starting June 1, 2008 (the summer before your senior year in high school). The mentoring must be completed by the high school graduation date
· Mentoring must be done on a volunteer basis. If you receive any monetary compensation for the mentoring, you are not eligible for this scholarship.
· Must continue your education at a 2 or 4 year US accredited institution.
· Must complete a 2009 champions for Children Scholarship Application form.
· Write an essay describing your mentoring experience (must be type-written).
· Submit four (4) letters of recommendation:
o Letter signed by the adult supervisor of the mentoring program(s) verifying the 100 hours. If you participate in more than one program, you must submit letters from each program supervisor. Your mentoring hours umt total at least 100. A parent or guardian cannot serve as the program supervisor.
o Letter signed by an adult character reference – parent, guardian or other relative cannot write the letter of recommendation
o Letter signed by the High School Principal of your school
o Letter signed by the High School Counselor of your school

What is the Deadline?

MUW Minority Day

inority Day aspires to increase minority high school juniors and seniors awareness in regards to applying and attending college. In addition, students will gain knowledge pertaining to academic offerings, scholarship opportunities, social interaction, and the opportunity to learn about our Summer Bridge Institute (June 28 - August 1, 2009). This year, high school seniors will have an opportunity to interview for a Minority Day Scholarship ranging from $250.00 to $500.00. There is a section on the application that the student will need to complete if they are interested in interviewing for the Minority Day Scholarship. The Summer Bridge Institute is a five week residential program held during the second summer session of summer school. The 2008 Summer Bridge Institute will start on June 28th and end on August 1st. The program assists students in "Bridging the Gap" between high school and their freshman year in college. This is an intensive program consisting of both academic and life skills activities. Full support is provided for books, housing, meals, and tuition. Students will receive 4 college credit hours and many other life skills in which they can utilize in their upcoming college careers.

Recipients are required to participate in the Ina E. Gordy Honors College, live in the Honors Residence Hall, & participate in the Honors Summer Study Abroad Program. This scholarship also includes a one time award of $5,000 to be used toward the study abroad program.

HONORS
The average scholarship amount awarded is $25,483 over a 4-year period. This scholarship also includes a one-time award of $2,500 to be used toward the study abroad program. Recipients are required to participate in the Honors College, live in the Honors Residence Hall, & participate in the Honors Study Abroad Program

UNIVERSITY
The amounts of these renewable scholarship packages vary, but the average 4-year award is $23,000. Out-of-State fee scholarships are given if applicable. Recipients are encouraged to participate in Honors College.

Conrad Hollis Scholarship - University of Alabama

Any senior planning on attending University of Alabama is eligible for this scholarship. The amount of the scholarship depends on the funds available. Every senior with average income planning on being a freshman at UA in the fall of 2009 is elgible. There is NO essay, NO minimum GPA, NO ACT score required. You MUST apply to UA by November 3oth to be elibible. In December the University of Alabama will pull all applicants from Lowndes County and notify the scholarship committee, however New Hope Students will get 1st priority, so PLEASE let me know if you are interested so I can notify the commitee. Submit your printed application to your school principal or to the head of one of these officially designated local organizations: a county 4-H Group, Girl Scout council, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or affiliate of Hands On Network. They will then select one or more Local Honorees from the applicants in their schools or organizations, and nominate them for state-level judging.

All state-level honorees will be announced in February. The top middle level & high school applicant in each state and the District of Columbia, called State Honorees, will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expenses paid trip with at parent to Washington DC next May 2-5. From two to ten runners-up in each state, called Distinguished Finalists, will get bronze medallions. Other state-level winners will be named America’s top ten youth volunteers of the Year in Washington in May. Theses National Honorees are awarded an additional $5,000, gold medallions, crystal trophies and $5,000 grants for the charities of their choice.

In addition, all Local Honorees who have devoted a minimum number of hours to their volunteer activities will receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

  • Must be a freshman or sophomore enrolled in ROTC classes in college
  • Must have a minimum 20 ACT or a 940 SAT
  • Not currently on an Army or Air Force scholarship
  • US citizen
  • Meet service age requirements
  • Meet service height/weight requirements
  • Pass PFT by second semester
  • Pass DoD medical exam by third semester
  • Scholarship is conditional on final approval of the Vice President of Academic Affairs

No previous ROTC required. No military commitment required.
